Former CFL Coach to Lead Men’s Team as Sport Set to Debut at 2028 Olympics
Paul LaPolice has been appointed as the head coach of the Canadian men’s national flag football team, Football Canada announced Thursday. Alongside him, Rachel Lessard has been named head coach of Canada’s senior women’s flag football team.
Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028 in Los Angeles, marking a significant milestone for the sport.
Paul LaPolice’s Coaching Experience
LaPolice, a seasoned coach with over 20 years of professional coaching experience, has previously served as head coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2010-2012) and the Ottawa Redblacks (2020-2022) in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Most recently, he worked as a football analyst with TSN.
With his strong background as an offensive coach in the CFL, LaPolice’s expertise is expected to be a great asset as he transitions into flag football. His leadership will be instrumental as Canada works toward qualifying for the 2028 Olympics.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Paul LaPolice to our national team program,” said Katie Miyazaki, Football Canada’s Director of High Performance. “His proven leadership and commitment to excellence, combined with his vast professional experience, will elevate our program to the next level.”
Canada’s national flag football teams will begin preparations for international qualification events and the 2026 IFAF World Flag Football Championship, a key event for Olympic participation.
LaPolice expressed his excitement about his new role, saying: “I am humbled to be able to represent the football community of Canada as well as the country that I have called home for the past 25 years.”
Football Canada’s final ID camp will be held in Montreal on May 23-24.
Rachel Lessard’s Extensive Experience
Rachel Lessard brings more than 29 years of experience as both a player and coach. She will lead Canada’s women’s national flag football team as they prepare for the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China.
“Rachel has a deep understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level and how to be a leader in that space,” said Miyazaki. “She’s a proven winner, and under her guidance, our athletes will be well-positioned to achieve their fullest potential on the international stage.”
Lessard’s track record includes serving as head coach and defensive coordinator for Montreal’s Cayenne senior team, as well as for Quebec’s under-18 provincial excellence program. Her extensive success includes earning multiple medals nationally and internationally, such as gold at the 2024 national senior championships and the 2024 Tampa World Championships. Most recently, she led the University of Montreal to a second Canadian collegiate flag football national title.
“This game has given me everything,” said Lessard. “I’m proud and humbled to have the privilege to lead these extraordinary athletes. Eyes on the podium. The journey starts now.”
