On the Ground:
Protesters and police clashed for a fourth day in Los Angeles. Police used flash bangs and rubber bullets after being targeted with thrown objects. A CNN news crew was escorted out by police at one point. Protests against U.S. immigration enforcement (ICE) are continuing nationwide.
Military Involvement Increases:
Around 700 U.S. Marines have been deployed to protect federal buildings and staff. President Trump has also called in 2,000 additional National Guard troops—doubling the original deployment.
Local Leaders Push Back:
Tom Homan, a federal official overseeing border matters, said the troop deployment is necessary to control the situation. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass strongly opposed the move. Bass accused the federal government of using Los Angeles as a “testing ground” for asserting power.
