Authorities in the restive Indian state of Manipur have imposed a curfew in five districts and suspended internet services for five days after fresh violence erupted over the arrest of members of a radical Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol.
Mobs attacked police posts, set a bus ablaze, and blocked roads after the group’s commander and others were detained. The group has also declared a 10-day shutdown in the valley areas.
Manipur has witnessed ongoing tensions between the Hindu Meitei majority and the Christian Kuki minority, with over 250 people killed since 2023 and nearly 60,000 displaced. The root causes include land disputes and competition over public sector jobs, worsened by alleged political manipulation.
