This evening, the Liberal Party will reveal its new leader, who is poised to assume the role of prime minister during a period marked by economic challenges and a significantly strained relationship with the nation’s previously closest ally.
The individual selected by the party will only officially become prime minister after receiving the oath of office from the Governor General. This decision not only signifies a new era for the Liberals but may also herald the forthcoming of a federal election.
The candidates for the position include former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister and current MP Chrystia Freeland, former House leader and current MP Karina Gould, and Montreal business leader and former MP Frank Baylis.
This relatively brief leadership contest was initiated when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in early January his plan to resign, following increasing dissent within the caucus and Freeland’s resignation from the cabinet.
