BRAMPTON – The City of Brampton invites residents to recognize, honour and celebrate Emancipation Day, recognized globally on August 1, as the day to commemorate the abolition of slavery of people of African and Indigenous descent across the British Empire, including Canada. Residents are invited to reflect, educate, engage and celebrate in the ongoing fight against anti-Black and Indigenous racism and discrimination.

The City first recognized Emancipation Day in 2020 with the renaming of Dixie 407 Sports Park to Emancipation Park, which features minor and major soccer pitches, and cricket grounds. This year, the City continues to upgrade the park with enhanced amenities and improved landscaping including a temporary washroom facility, beautiful garden bed and a tree planting initiative. The City invites everyone to recognize the Black and Indigenous communities in Brampton, and celebrate with a day of arts, culture, food and community.
