Brampton – Every year in October, Islamic History Month is recognized in Canada. This is a time to reflect and learn together about Islamic traditions and recognize the rich, longstanding contributions Muslims have made to literature, math, science, art, and history — here in Brampton, throughout Canada and around the world.
We are a country rich in diversity, with a population of almost 2 million Canadian Muslims who have contributed significantly to the success of our society. Canadian Muslims have helped shape our country and city through their professional contributions, rich culture, and traditions.
The City of Brampton recognizes and wishes to affirm the important contributions that Muslims make as part of the vibrant social, economic, political and cultural fabric of our City.
In 2019, Brampton City Council proudly approved the National Council for Canadian Muslim (NCCM) municipal recommendations, supporting the important work towards fighting against Islamophobia in Brampton. The NCCM has been instrumental in advocacy work for Canadian Muslims. The City will continue working with all our diverse communities for a healthy, safe, and inclusive Brampton to cultivate meaningful change.
As we celebrate Islamic History Month, we recognize that Islamophobia and hate crimes remain a sad reality in our community and our City. By observing this month, we are creating awareness and breaking down the walls of hate to build a more tolerant and understanding society and City.
In recognition of Islamic History Month, all are welcome to join the City of Brampton Flag Raising Ceremony and attend open houses at mosques across the city throughout October. Brampton residents are invited to participate and learn about the people, faith, culture and traditions with a mosque tour, food, and refreshments.
