Ottawa – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada is imposing new sanctions against 9 individuals and 6 entities under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations. These sanctions are imposed against persons who, by their role in the Kremlin-backed orchestration of disinformation and war propaganda, directly promote Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Canada is also sanctioning disinformation entities that are either directly funded by the state as federally-owned entities or receive funding in the form of state grants distributed by Kremlin agents. These entities, together with the individuals mentioned above, are part of an organized network whose intent is to spread false narratives and propaganda as if it were expert opinion in an attempt to legitimize Russia’s unjustifiable violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Canada continues to condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s unprovoked and unjustifiable war against Ukraine and remains unwavering in its support to Ukraine and its people, who continue to defend their independence, rights and freedoms in the face of Russia’s invasion of their country.
“We continue to condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s use of war propagandists to justify its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Together with our international partners, we will continue to stand up to the Russian regime and address Russian disinformation. We call on Putin and his collaborators to immediately put an end to this unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, which continues to jeopardize stability in the entire region and put countless lives at risk.” – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs
