Toronto – Harbourfront Centre is Toronto’s waterfront home to arts, cultural, and recreational programming. Budget 2024 takes action to empower artists and art organizations to make our communities more inclusive, vibrant, and resilient—so that every generation has a fair shot at a good middle class life.
Starting this year, the federal government will provide $10 million over two years to support Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre—a world-renowned cultural hub that contributes to the vitality of Toronto’s waterfront while welcoming visitors from across Canada and the world. With this investment, Harbourfront Centre will be able to complete pending repairs in order to continue welcoming visitors and help the local economy. The investment will also support Canadian artists, ensuring they have a place to showcase their talents to Torontonians and beyond as well as improve access to community arts, culture, and recreation.
Through Budget 2024, the federal government is building a fairer Canada, where every generation can reach their full potential. It is making Canada’s tax system fairer by asking the very wealthiest to pay their fair share—so that we can make investments, including in arts and culture, for every generation.
“Harbourfront Centre is an important cultural hub where Torontonians can come together and celebrate artists across Canada and the world—and we know this campus has faced some real challenges during and since the pandemic. Today’s investment is about ensuring Toronto remains a culturally vibrant city for generations to come. This investment is just one example of how our government is helping revitalize communities and continuing to provide support to the next generation of Canadian artists.” – Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance
“A vibrant and accessible hub for artists and diverse communities, Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre has for decades been an incubator for world-class talent. It builds a special connection to all those who step through their doors. This funding boost will support their infrastructure and performance spaces, helping them to remain a source of joy and expression. Our government is dedicated to fostering a thriving cultural landscape across Canada, and this support underscores our commitment to nurturing the arts and making space for captivating creative experiences for both locals and visitors for years to come.” – Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage
