London – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom.
Minister Joly congratulated Secretary Lammy on his appointment following the United Kingdom’s July 4, 2024, general election.
During their meeting, the ministers discussed their shared commitment to national and international security and to global prosperity. They agreed to seize opportunities to address common geopolitical threats and uphold human rights and international law.
They discussed ongoing financial and military support to Ukraine through NATO and the G7, as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion. Minister Joly took the opportunity to thank Secretary Lammy for the United Kingdom’s support of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, which Canada co-leads with Ukraine.
The two ministers spoke about how Canada and the United Kingdom can work with the international community to address some of the most pressing regional and global security concerns, including in the Middle East.
Minister Joly and Secretary Lammy also identified areas for increased partnership and collaboration and agreed that both countries would continue to leverage their unique relationship, including through a successful Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa this fall.
