Tokyo – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is visiting Japan. In Tokyo, Minister Joly met Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, KAMIKAWA Yoko, to discuss progress made under the Canada-Japan Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. They explored ways to strengthen political and economic ties, as well as highlight priorities for Canada’s upcoming G7 presidency in 2025. The Ministers exchanged perspectives on the various regional and global peace and security challenges, including the expanding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia; the ongoing tensions in the Indo-Pacific; the situation in the Middle East; and those stemming from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Minister Joly also met with other senior interlocutors, including Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, HAYASHI Yoshimasa, to reiterate Canada’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Japan. Throughout her engagements, Minister Joly reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to working closely with Japan in the Indo-Pacific and globally to uphold the rules-based international order.
