CALGARY – Scoring stars Tyler McGregor and Liam Hickey are among the 18 players named to the Canadian roster for the four-country 2024 Para Hockey Cup set for December 8-14 in Charlottetown at the Bell Aliant Centre.

Sixteen of the 18 players selected were members of Team Canada that won the gold medal last May at the Para ice hockey World Championships in Calgary. The team selected its roster from the 32 players who participated in the evaluation camp, September 27 to October 2 in Elmira, Ont.

“The Para Cup is an exciting event as we showcase our game to Canadians across the country and are thrilled to bring the tournament to Charlottetown this year,” said Canada’s head coach Russ Herrington.

The tournament features the top-four teams in the world. Canada opens December 8 against Czechia, the world championship bronze medallists, then faces China on December 9 and its arch-rival the USA, the reigning Paralympic champions, on December 11.

The semifinals are December 13 and the medal matches December 14. Here is the full schedule.

TSN and RDS will broadcast the medal games on Saturday, December 14; please check local listings for details. All other games are available on a pay-per-view basis at HNLive.ca. Game tickets at the Bell Aliant Centre can be purchased HERE

Paralympic Games spots on the line at the 2025 Para ice hockey world championships

Canada has hosted the last two Para ice hockey world championships – 2023 in Moose Jaw, Sask., and 2024 in Calgary – and Canadians won’t have to travel far for the 2025 edition with border city Buffalo, NY, named as host last month.

The tournament is set for May 24-31. The world’s top eight teams will compete in the event, with the top five finishers earning qualification spots for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.

Tyler Turner just misses podium at Para snowboard World Cup

The Para snowboard World Cup season got under late last week at the indoor venue in Landgraaf, the Netherlands.

Tyler Turner of Campbell River, B.C., Canada’s first Paralympic Games champion in the sport, posted fourth and sixth place finishes in the two banked slalom events in the men’s lower limb 1 (LLA) category.. American Noah Elliott and Chris Vos of the Netherlands were 1-2 in both races.

‘’Right now it’s tight between the top-five guys in the world,’’ Turner told CPC before leaving for Europe. ‘’Anyone can win on any day. It’s a huge season with the Paralympics next year. For me it’s maintaining consistency and feeling good about going into the next race. My goal is to peak at the right time which are the worlds and Paralympic Games.’’

Later this season Turner is vying for an unprecedented third straight world crown in the snowboard cross, his best event, at the world championships set for March 4-10 at Big White, BC. Two-time Paralympian Sandrine Hamel of St-Sauveur, Que., was fifth and sixth in her two banked slalom races in the women’s LL1.

“After seeing all the disqualifications, the aim was just to be able to get through that corner and set a time that made sense,’’ Hamel told Sportcom after her race. ‘’Everyone was going for a slightly more cautious approach there.

“The competition was strong, the Chinese are very good and that adds a challenge.” Alex Massie of Barrie, Ont., also a two-time Paralympian, was fifth and seventh in the men’s LL2.
