BRAMPTON, ON— The City of Brampton is introducing key amendments to the Mobile Licensing By-law 67-2014 aimed at helping to support the local taxicab industry. Effective January 1, 2025, taxicab tariff rates will increase to better reflect operating costs, while licensing fees will be reduced to provide financial relief to the industry.

Key amendments to the by-law

  • Expanded broker deposit times: A taxi ride broker deposit of up to $20.00 can now be required at any time of the day, instead of only after hours.
  • Taxicab tariff increase: The initial fare for taxicabs will rise by 9.5 per cent from $4.25 to $4.75 for the first 125 metres and $0.25 for each additional 125 meters.
  • $100 annual licensing fee reductions: Annual licensing fees for taxicab owners and drivers will be reduced from $518 to $418.

A taxicab tariff is the regulated fare structure that determines the rates passengers pay for taxi services, including initial fares, rates per kilometre, waiting time fees and other associated costs, which are periodically adjusted to reflect economic conditions and operational costs. In 2024, 282 City of Brampton licensed taxi plates were issued.

Approved by Brampton City Council, these amendments aim to address economic challenges faced by the taxicab sector. By ensuring a sustainable and competitive industry, these changes will help reinforce reliable transportation options and commuting choices for residents.
