GATINEAU – Canada’s Commissioner of Competition, Matthew Boswell, attended the G7 Competition Authorities and Policymakers’ Summit today to discuss competition in digital markets and emerging technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence (AI). Commissioner Boswell will also attend the International Symposium on merger enforcement and regulatory developments on November 9th, 2023. These meetings, hosted by Japan’s Fair Trade Commission and Headquarters for Digital Market Competition, come at a crucial time. Governments and competition authorities around the world continue to work towards solutions to the new challenges posed by the growth of digital markets, emerging technologies, and big tech.

The Summit is a unique opportunity for G7 competition agencies to discuss common areas of interest in promoting competitive digital markets. It provides an important forum for international collaboration and building shared knowledge. Business activities in the digital economy often cross borders and raise similar competition issues across jurisdictions. To build on the work of previous G7 Summits, the competition authorities are publishing an update to the compendium of approaches to improving competition in digital markets. The compendium shows the vast amount of effort G7 competition authorities are dedicating to digital markets, detailing each authority’s work and highlighting shared approaches. The compendium will continue to support coordination between competition authorities. It is also a resource for governments and policymakers as they develop legislative and regulatory policies for digital markets, emerging technologies, and big tech.

“Protecting and promoting competition in digital markets is a top priority for the Bureau and is critical for Canadian consumers and businesses. I would like to thank Japan’s Fair Trade Commission and Headquarters for Digital Market Competition for hosting these discussions. I would like to also thank our G7 partners for their continued efforts as we collaborate to keep pace with the growth of the digital economy and emerging technologies.” – Matthew Boswell, Commissioner of Competition
