After Doug Ford’s decisive victory in Ontario, many might have expected Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to quickly seek Ford’s help in securing the crucial battleground province in the upcoming federal election. However, Poilievre has stated that he has not approached the Ontario Premier for assistance. Meanwhile, Ford has made it clear that he will not publicly endorse any candidate and intends to remain focused on his provincial duties, staying out of the federal election.
Ford had also stayed out of the 2019 and 2021 federal elections, but analysts suggest that his hesitation to support a fellow Conservative in this race may stem from tensions between him and Poilievre. It’s also believed that Ford sees little political advantage in helping Poilievre, especially given the current political landscape.
Despite this, Ford is unlikely to be sidelined by Poilievre if the latter wins. Political analysts point out that Ford has shown a willingness to work with anyone who shares his policy objectives, whether that be Liberal Leader Mark Carney or Poilievre. As Ontario holds 122 seats in the federal election, it’s clear that Ford’s involvement in supporting Poilievre could be crucial to securing a Conservative victory. However, there has been little indication that either party is actively pursuing a partnership at this stage.
Both Poilievre and Ford have denied reports that Poilievre had reached out to Ford for support. Ford emphasized that he would not be assisting anyone in the election and instead expressed his focus on moving Ontario forward. When asked if members of his provincial government might help the federal Conservatives, Ford said that his MPPs would be too occupied with their responsibilities in Ontario to assist with the federal campaign.
Ford refrained from commenting on whether he would have a better working relationship with Poilievre or Carney, instead asserting that he is willing to work with anyone. He also acknowledged having close relationships with several federal Liberal ministers, including Chrystia Freeland and Dominic LeBlanc, which he noted was “no secret.” In contrast, Ford admitted he didn’t know Poilievre or Carney personally.
