Detroit – Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, met with Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) trade ministerial.
During their meeting, Minister Ng shared with Minister Nishimura that she will be leading a Team Canada Trade Mission to Japan, as previously announced by Prime Minister Kishida and Prime Minister Trudeau, from October 30-November 3, 2023. This will build on the 2 countries’ strong trade and investment ties. Team Canada Trade Missions are a key part of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which supports economic prosperity in Canada and throughout the region.
The Ministers also discussed Canada and Japan’s strong partnership, including in industrial sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and advanced technology. The ministers discussed Japan’s presidency of the G7 and the priorities that members are discussing, including economic security. As strong allies in support of rules-based international trade, Minister Ng and Minister Nishimura discussed efforts to reform the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Both Ministers underscored the importance of upholding the high standards of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
