Ottawa – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met in Brasilia with Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. The ministers discussed ways to enhance the collaboration between the two countries on shared priorities. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Brazil’s priorities for its upcoming 2024 G20 presidency.
In this spirit of cooperation, the two ministers chaired the fourth edition of the Strategic Partnership Dialogue between Canada and Brazil. This dialogue focused on key areas of collaboration, including strengthening and reforming the rules-based international order, promoting democracy and human rights, Indigenous rights, protecting the environment, and ensuring peace and security, including by achieving sustainable peace in Ukraine.
Canada is committed to being a meaningful and reliable partner to Brazil by contributing to global and regional peace and stability and responding to international crises that impact the region. This is why Minister Joly signed the Canada-Brazil Defence Cooperation Agreement today.
The Defence Cooperation Agreement aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries across several key areas, such as peacekeeping operations under the United Nations, military operations, joint exercises, training, logistics support, the acquisition of defence products and services, and research and development. It also seeks to enhance cooperation in providing humanitarian assistance and supporting international emergency responses.
“During a period of geopolitical turbulence, it is important that we reinforce our relationships in every corner of the world and position Canada as a strong, reliable partner for decades to come. Today, we have done just that with Brazil, and we will continue to work together to reinforce peace and stability in the Americas and globally.” – Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“During my visit to Brazil last year, I reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to defence cooperation with partners throughout the Americas. The Canada-Brazil Defence Cooperation Agreement will allow Canada and Brazil to enhance their collaboration, including in the areas of peacekeeping, training and humanitarian assistance. Together, we will also bolster our work to advance the women, peace and security agenda. I look forward to seeing how this agreement will develop our bilateral ties.” -Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence
