Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, has expressed his support for B.C. candidate Aaron Gunn after Indigenous leaders and organizations criticized Gunn over his controversial online posts. These posts, dating from between 2019 and 2021, sparked backlash as Gunn denied labeling Canada’s historical treatment of Indigenous Peoples as “genocide.”

The controversy arose when Gunn’s past social media posts resurfaced, in which he rejected the characterization of Canada’s treatment of Indigenous people as “genocide.” These remarks were widely condemned by Indigenous leaders and activists, highlighting issues such as the residential school system and systemic discrimination against Indigenous peoples.

In response to the backlash, several prominent Indigenous leaders and organizations called for Gunn’s removal from the Conservative Party’s candidate list. RoseAnne Archibald, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), described Gunn’s comments as “horrific” and “dangerous.”

Gunn, however, stood by his previous comments, stating that he believes it is incorrect to label Canada’s treatment of Indigenous people as genocide. He argued that the term is politically motivated and does not help in resolving the issues faced by Indigenous communities.

Poilievre, on the other hand, defended Gunn, asserting that individuals should have the right to express their opinions. He emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and not punishing people for having differing views.
