Geneva – The WHO recently declared aspartame a potential carcinogen but experts say this is just a small part as a number of other health risks are also linked to this artificial sweetener — used in most diet sodas and other beverages. Aspartame sensitivity can cause some people to get headaches or migraines after consuming aspartame-containing products. A rare but possible allergic reaction to aspartame can occur in some people; cause gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain, a higher risk of developing certain cardiovascular conditions, including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.
