Council approved motion includes Mayor’s Tariff Task Force and focused advocacy efforts

BRAMPTON – The City of Brampton is taking action to protect the local economy and jobs following the United States’ proposed tariffs on Canadian goods. At its meeting today, Brampton City Council passed a motion calling for strong, reciprocal measures and the creation of the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force to support ongoing efforts and plans to build and strengthen market opportunities outside the USA.

Introducing the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force

To support local businesses, Council approved the creation of the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force, which will focus on:
  • City-to-city engagement: Strengthening relationships with US municipalities and businesses that share a vested interest in a fair, stable trade relationship.
  • Business outreach: Working directly with US companies operating in Brampton and identifying new opportunities for local businesses.
  • Diversifying trade relationships: Reducing reliance on US markets by strengthening global partnerships and advocating for reduced barriers to interprovincial trade.

Advocating for federal support

The City of Brampton is urging the federal government to provide emergency financial assistance to help Canadian businesses offset shipping costs and access to new markets. A temporary relief package would allow local businesses to remain competitive and resilient in the face of new trade barriers.
Brampton is home to thriving industries that contribute significantly to Canada’s economy. As the city continues to grow, its businesses must have the support and resources needed to compete on the global stage. The City of Brampton remains committed to working with all levels of government, businesses and trade partners to promote fair, balanced and sustainable economic growth.
Brampton stands with Canada in supporting reciprocal tariffs to counter the proposed U.S. measures. With a proposed blanket tax of 25% on most Canadian goods and the threat of additional tariffs on select goods and services, some items may be subjected to tariffs of 50% or greater. The City of Brampton is calling on the federal and provincial governments to act swiftly on national reciprocal action and provincial supports to safeguard Canadian businesses and workers.
