Brampton – The City of Brampton, in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans Association of Ontario, will recognize Journey to Freedom Day on April 29, honouring the contributions Vietnamese Canadians have made and continue to make in Brampton.
Journey to Freedom Day commemorates the journey Vietnamese refugees made in search of peace and freedom after the fall of Saigon in April of 1975. In 2015, Canada established the Journey to Freedom Act to commemorate the exodus of Vietnamese refugees and their acceptance in Canada at the end of the Vietnam War.
On April 29 City Hall will host traditional performances at the inaugural event. There will be a community-led flag raising, followed by a reception in the City Hall Conservatory, with food, music and performances.

“On this day and every day, we honour the contributions of Vietnamese Canadians in making Brampton the unique, thriving and inclusive community it is. During Journey to Freedom Day, we commemorate the lives lost and recognize those who settled in Canada. I look forward to gathering with the Vietnam Veterans Association of Ontario to reflect on this journey and honour all that the future holds.” – Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton
