Brampton – The City of Brampton welcomes the Government of Canada’s 2023 Budget: A Made-in-Canada Plan: Strong Middle Class, Affordable Economy, Healthy Future released by Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. The federal budget supports Brampton residents and businesses through key investments in affordable housing, support to combat the opioid crisis, protecting places of worship and boosting consumer confidence.
A new tax free-first home savings account will allow more people to enter housing market, as the City works alongside all partners to ensure more affordable options are available. The City of Brampton welcomes efforts to boost construction of new affordable homes through reallocation of resources in the National Housing Co-Investment Fund to create more homes for Canadians.
As the City works toward establishing Brampton as a tourism destination through hosting events like the IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championships and building a new urban core with a world class multi-purpose Cricket stadium, the City of Brampton applauds the $50 million over three years for Destination Canada to attract major international conventions, conferences, and events.
Outlined in the budget are also plans to combat hate at places of worship, including $49.5 million over five years for Communities at Risk: Security Infrastructure Program and $25.4 million over five years to support Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy. The City of Brampton looks forward to future partnerships with the Government of Canada and faith leaders to establish policies, procedures and protocols in this regard.
The City welcomes the $359.2 million over five years to support renewed Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy, providing a continuum of care that benefits the overall health and wellbeing of our neighbourhoods and urban centres. The City of Brampton continues to advocate for growth and sustainability initiatives with both federal and provincial partners, helping to advance projects which focus on long-lasting economic impact, job creation, civic pride and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
“Creating safe and inclusive communities where all are housed, supported and can thrive is a key theme at the City of Brampton and within the Government of Canada’s 2023 Budget. I am happy to see additional support for protecting places of worship in this federal budget. Religious freedom is a cornerstone of a strong democracy and important to our multi faith community. I also look forward to working with our federal partners to create more housing options to ensure everyone has a safe, secure home to learn and grow.” – Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton
