Yellowknife – Investing in northern entrepreneurship creates new economic pathways through creativity, collaboration and innovation. Entrepreneurs and innovators can bring new experiences and expertise to support sustainable economic diversification, innovation, and self-reliance in communities across the territories.
Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, on behalf of Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, announced an investment of $732,944, delivered through CanNor, towards a three-year project by Makerspace YK. Makerspace YK is a registered non-profit that operates an inclusive hub for supporting entrepreneurs, start-ups, and creatives. This funding will support Makerspace YK in expanding programming and making workspace improvements at their Yellowknife location, enhancing accessibility and allowing Makerspace YK to provide more specialized services.
Through investments like this, the Government of Canada is supporting modernized and accessible entrepreneurship and business development in the North, bolstering diversified economic growth in territorial economies.
“Supporting community-led makerspaces facilitates collaboration and helps foster a shared vision that leads to new and innovative ideas, products, and businesses. By building strong, sustainable, and inclusive territorial economies that are driven by Northerners, we are creating better opportunities for up and coming businesses. Makerspace YK is driving economic development in the Northwest Territories by strengthening local initiatives and supporting skills development for local entrepreneurs, start-ups and creatives.” – Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor
