Ottawa – Young people play a vital role in shaping the future of Canada’s low-carbon economy. The Government of Canada is investing in the potential of young people across the country to ensure they develop and bring their skills, knowledge and experience to the table as Canada seizes economic opportunities and builds a more sustainable future.
Today, Julie Dabrusin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources and Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, announced over $30 million for job-creation and training opportunities over the next two years for youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and other related fields in the natural resource sectors that have positive environmental outcomes.
Participating organizations will create 960 green jobs and training opportunities for young people to gain valuable on-the-job experience and to continue careers in the fields of energy, forestry, mining, earth sciences and clean technology sectors. These jobs are now available through nine delivery organizations:
- Clean Foundation Nova Scotia
- Colleges and Institutes Canada
- Electricity Human Resources Canada
- Environmental Careers Organization of Canada
- Indigenous Clean Energy Social Enterprise
- Mining Industry Human Resources Council
- Pinnguaq Association
- Project Learning Tree Canada
- United Nations Association in Canada
Funded for this important initiative is provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP), part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) to increase the employability skills of youth aged 15 to 30 and invest in building a diverse and inclusive workforce in the natural resource sectors. Creating green jobs will ensure that Canada’s natural resource sectors remain a source of opportunity and prosperity as we transition to a low-carbon future.
