Austria – Veteran Para alpine skier Kurt Oatway of Calgary won the silver medal in the men’s sitting Super G on Wednesday to open the 10-stop World Cup season. Oatway was just .08 seconds from top spot earned by Jesper Pedersen of Norway in 1:07.00. There were 13 entries.
“Today felt pretty good and overall I’m happy with the result,” said Oatway. “There was one turn that I could’ve cleaned up and that might have made the difference between first and second.” Other Canadians in action in this opening race were Kalle Ericsson (Kimberley, BC) and guide Sierra Smith (Ottawa), fourth in the men’s visually impaired race, and with a pair of sixth-place finishes were Katie Combaluzier (Toronto) in women’s sitting and Michaela Gosselin (Collingwood, Ont.) in women’s standing. The Steinach am Brenner World Cup continues with the super combined on Thursday and another Super G on Friday.
