A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Central Myanmar on Friday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey, with tremors also felt across Thailand and neighboring Chinese provinces.
Thai authorities report that one person was killed and 50 others injured after a high-rise building collapsed in Bangkok’s capital following the earthquake.
Myanmar experienced a powerful aftershock of 6.4 magnitude approximately 12 minutes after the initial quake, according to the USGS.
Myanmar, one of Asia’s poorest nations, is ill-equipped to handle a disaster of this scale, especially as it remains engulfed in a brutal four-year civil war following the military coup.
