Saudi Arabia Cuts India’s Private Hajj Quota by 80%, Sparks Concern Among Indian Leaders

Saudi Arabia has slashed the private Hajj quota for Indian pilgrims by 80% for the upcoming Hajj season. This unexpected move has triggered serious concern among political leaders in India, including Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti.

Earlier this year, India and Saudi Arabia had agreed on a total Hajj quota of 175,025 pilgrims for 2025. Out of this, 70% was allocated to the government-run Hajj Committee of India, while 30% was designated for private Hajj tour operators. Now, reports indicate that a major portion of the private operator quota has been withdrawn, causing uncertainty for thousands of applicants.

Omar Abdullah voiced his concern over the cut, calling for clarity in the allocation process and fairness in treatment. Mehbooba Mufti also expressed disappointment, urging the Indian government to ensure that people from all backgrounds have equal access to pilgrimage opportunities.

Many prospective pilgrims who had registered through private channels now face cancellation and confusion. Travel agencies and private tour organizers are demanding answers and reconsideration of the quota cut. The reduction is expected to affect not only the pilgrims but also many small businesses dependent on Hajj tourism.
