Toronto – Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario Minister of Transportation, Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto, and Jamaal Myers, Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), announced the on-time delivery of the first of 60 new made-in-Canada streetcars to the TTC, supported by a $568 million joint investment. The first new streetcars will enter service today.
The federal government’s $180 million investment through the Zero Emission Transit Fund supported the purchase of 47 of the 60 streetcars, as well as design and construction for upgrades to the existing Hillcrest Complex—a maintenance and storage facility that can accommodate at least 25 streetcars.
The manufacturing of these new low-floor, high-capacity streetcars is supporting more than 300 good-paying jobs at Alstom’s facility in Thunder Bay, Ontario. All 60 of the new made-in-Canada streetcars will be delivered throughout 2023, 2024, and 2025.
By continuing to invest in Canada’s growing cities—and the public transit and infrastructure they need—the federal government is ensuring our communities and economy can continue to grow, while also providing more affordable transportation options and keeping Canada on track to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Over the next year, the ongoing delivery of these new, modern, and accessible streetcars will provide Torontonians with more comfortable, reliable, and efficient public transit, while also protecting the environment and supporting more than 300 Canadian manufacturing jobs.
